My favorite recipes for dog treats!

Easy Peasy Chicken and Sweet Potato Treats

This recipe came about when I was in Saudi Arabia and prepackaged dog treats were difficult to come by on any given day. Make a batch, freeze some if you like, or keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Ingredients

1 large baked sweet potato – skin removed

2 cups dry stone ground oatmeal

1 lb roll of either frozen chicken or frozen turkey (defrosted)

  1. Mix everything in a large bowl and spoon it in approximately 2 inch balls onto a sprayed or oiled cookie sheet. Bake at 375 Fahrenheit for about 20-22 mins. Cool and refrigerator to keep fresh.

I usually take one out of the fridge about 30 mins before I want to give it to the dogs, allowing it to warm to room temperature.

I dare any dog to not eat it! Obviously, if your dog is allergic to grains don’t make these treats!

Peanut Butter and Banana Treats

3 cups whole-wheat flour

1/2 cup wheat germ

1 cup water

1/4 cup all-natural peanut butter (no sugar or salt added)

1 egg

1 banana, mashed

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients mix well.
  2. On a floured surface, knead the dough until it is firm.
  3. Roll the dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with the cookie cutter of your choice. Transfer cookie to a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the cookies are dry and firm to touch. Turn of the heat; let the cookies stand in the oven until hard, 1 to 2 hours.

The perfect treat for a spring day! This recipe provides your dog with plenty of Vitamin E, Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, Protein, Potassium, Magnesium. In addition, I like to give these to my dogs after they’ve taken a long walk/run or have been playing in the yard for awhile. The banana and wheat germ help to rebalance electrolytes, promote skin and coat health as well as helping nerves and muscles recover from a strenuous workout. I’ve taken this recipe from one of, “A Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin”, written by Cheryl Gianfrancesco entitled, Homemade Treats For Happy, Healthy Dogs.

Again, take all allergies into consideration!
